Dr. Shonka has been practicing in Boulder for over 25 years. He graduated from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in 1978. He served a surgical residency at Hines Veterans Administration Hospital, associated with Loyola University School of Medicine. He opened his practice on September 1, 1980.
Dr. Shonka is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Colorado Podiatric Medical Association. He is board certified by two organizations, the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine. He is a Fellow and Past President of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is a Fellow of the American College of Foot Orthopedics and Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, and he serves as the attending podiatrist at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine.
Dr. Shonka's practice centers about reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle and sports medicine. He enjoys playing the role of "an information broker" and invites active participation of his patients in the decision-making process regarding their care.
An active cyclist, he has been actively involved in athletics his entire life. He played college and Junior B hockey in the Chicago area where he grew up. He and his wife Holly, and their six children, enjoy cycling together and team participation in various triathlons. Dr. Shonka steadfastly maintains that time bonuses should be awarded to recreational athletes based on the number of children they have.
